"The album is called "Don't Let Go", after the late 50s hit sung by Roy Hamilton. The CD-cover is a collage by our friend, Donna Stjerna, of Still On the Hill. The musicians playing with me are, once again, my old South Carolina friends Danny Harlow, Cary Taylor, Susan Taylor, and, for the first time, Virginia Peninger on viola. Also featured are my long-time friend Wayne Manning on bass vocals, Michigander Bill Hart on fluegelhorn and Robert Bowlin on violin. (Robert was Bill Monroe's last fiddler and has played on several of my CDs.) Even though the songs range from a 1920s blues tune and a 1950s George Shearing jazz piece, and from a mysterious rocker from The Band to a Sinatra crooner, we retained the same ensemble throughout - acoustic bass, guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and viola.
The song-tributes contained on the CD reflect strong influences upon my music and career, not just by the songwriters, but by certain artists who performed the songs, and sometimes, by certain artists' styles which had a lasting impact on me. I was asked why there is no song by Josh White, when he clearly was one of my heroes. My response was that I wasn't influenced so much by his songs, but by his intense style of performance and, especially, his rhythms. I was also affected by him as a person. All these influences may be detected in almost every song on the CD. Also, the influence of Ray Charles' interpretation of a cover song, 'That Lucky Old Sun' is apparent, as well as my admiration for the performance style of the late Frankie Laine"......Jack Williams
